Mrs. Hultgren's 2nd grade class at Hiawatha is learning about the life cycle of chickens! Recently, they checked to see if there was chick development within the eggs in their classroom. By holding a flashlight under the eggs, students were able to see whether there was no development at all, partial development, or the beginnings of a chick. 🐣
They labeled the eggs "yolkers", "quitters", and "winners"; respectively. The yolkers are eggs that were never fertilized and the quitters are eggs that started to develop, but did not make it at some point during incubation. Winners are the ones that have successfully developed into an embryo. We culled the quitters and the yolkers as once they start to rot, they give off gases that could have an effect on the development of the others. Hint: In about 13 days they could have a very noisy classroom!
