Gretchen Bates joined the Essex Westford School District Board, after being elected on April 9, 2024. Get to know the newest member a little better in this quick Q&A:
Tell us about your background and what specific strengths you bring to the EWSD Board.
GB: I was born and raised in Vermont and have worked as a nurse for over 25 years. I have worked extensively with patients in critical care as well as in management and as a substitute school nurse (in the EWSD and Burlington). My strengths include my current work and experience in leading projects and people while working within healthcare regulations and guidelines. These guidelines are similar to education in that the regulations are meant to make a better environment, but can be challenging at times when put into practice. I have worked closely with a board in the past and understand the benefits and challenges of being on one. I am a person who deeply believes in collaboration and has partnered with schools to support and lead running programs and science programs, as well as supporting music, theater, and sports at the high school.
What motivated you to want to become an EWSD Board member?
GB: I was motivated because I believe in the work the schools are doing and felt I needed to speak up at school board meetings for and with the community. I felt I would be even more productive in supporting the community on the school board rather than on the sidelines. I have a deep sense of community and feel we all have an obligation to step up and support public office when we have the ability, time, and desire to do so. I felt it was my obligation to get involved if I wanted to see change.
What is the most important responsibility of a school board?
GB: I feel the most important responsibility of a school board is to provide the most inclusive environment they can for teachers and students which fosters the ability for each child to achieve an outstanding education as they and their family define an outstanding education. The second most important responsibility is to be a vehicle of communication between the community and the school leaders.
