Jewish-American Heritage Month
President George W. Bush proclaimed May as Jewish-American Heritage Month in 2006. Jewish people first arrived in America in in 1654 in New Amsterdam. Jewish people played a key role in advocating for other minorities and their rights throughout American history. They participated in the Civil Rights Movement, making up a large portion of white Americans who showed up at voter registrations, rallies, sit-ins, etc. Albert Einstein and Ruth Bader Ginsburg are some of the most prominent Jewish American figures.

Mental Health Awareness Month
Since 1949, Mental Health Awareness month has been recognized by the Mental Health America organization, which was founded by Clifford Whittingham Beers. Beers was one of five children in his family who all suffered from mental illness and psychological distress. He wrote the book, “A Mind That Found Itself”, which is a bestseller even today. Beers believed that mental health patients should not only received care that is right for them but also that they should not feel alone in their fight against mental diseases.

Speech and Hearing Awareness Month exists to raise awareness about communication disorders and to encourage people to get regular hearing checks. The World Health Organization's World Health Report indicates that over 50% of people aged 12–35 years listen to music via personal audio devices at volumes that pose a risk to their hearing. There is no treatment to restore normal hearing (after loss), but you can prevent hearing loss from loud sounds.

Cinco de Mayo
Cinco de Mayo, also known as the Battle of Puebla Day, celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s May 5, 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. The win in the battle on May 5 represented a great symbolic victory for the Mexican government and bolstered the resistance movement. In parts of Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is recognized with military parades, battle reenactments and other festivities. Some of the largest celebrations in the United States take place in Houston, Los Angeles and Chicago, where traditional Mexican foods are served and parades and parties take place.

Memorial Day
Observed on the last Monday of May, Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States. The day is for mourning the loss of U.S. military personnel who have lost of their lives while serving in the armed forces. The first official observation of Memorial Day, also called Decoration Day, involved placing flowers on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery with Pre-President James Garfield delivering a speech.
