The Vermont Department of Health’s Asthma-Friendly Schools Program recently recognized Hiawatha as a gold-level Asthma-friendly school for 2023-24, while Founders earned silver status. Hiawatha school nurse Reyna Maher and FMS school nurse Alicia Goodkind were both singled out for their efforts in helping their respective schools earn this honor.
Hiawatha and FMS were two of only 23 schools in the state that were recognized for demonstrating the highest commitment to improving and maintaining asthma-friendly policies and practices and promoting good asthma management among their students.
Schools are recognized for ongoing work to meet existing state safety and other policy requirements, as well as steps to improve indoor air quality, strengthen asthma management, and support system improvements and staff training to ensure asthma-friendly school environments.
