Meet Our Staff

Alison Ruggles

An ACE staff member for over 14 years, Alison’s teaching philosophy embodies the essence of the program, that student engagement is at its greatest when students have ownership over their education. Alison is passionate about cultural experiences for students, exposing them to performing and visual arts, discovering their own passions, and becoming self advocates.  She enjoys using nature as a classroom and frequently seeks to find opportunities for student learning in the community.

Tom Emery

A veteran special educator for over 25 years, Tom brings a student-centered approach to his work with students.  Tom strives to create and maintain a strong rapport with both his students and their families, recognizing the importance of a good home-to-school connection.  Tom enjoys teaching Financial Literacy, American Government, and often looks to spark interest in the Natural World.

Tommy Varley

As the special education case manager at the ACE Program, Tommy provides specialized instruction for students with IEPs.  With an approach centered upon building relationships based on common interests, he looks to create a welcoming school environment for his students.  Tommy especially enjoys Social Studies, Cooking, and seeking out opportunities for cultural enrichment for students.

Chelsea Day

As our HowardCenter school services clinician, Chelsea provides case management for students in need of support in school, at home, and in the community.  Chelsea helps students identify personal goals such as developing coping strategies for managing anxiety or depression, independent living skills, navigating difficult social situations, personal advocacy, and harm reduction.  Chelsea closely collaborates with the ACE team to outline curriculum related to these issues, and provides clinical input related to our work with students.

A veteran educator at Essex High School for over 30 years, Jackie brings a wealth of classroom experience to the ACE community.  She strives to make meaningful relationships with each and every student.
